Processing scenarios suitable for laser welding

In our previous article, we broke down the real cost-benefit math of switching from traditional arc welding to handheld laser welding — and the ROI case was clear. But here’s the question that follows every fabricator who’s made that decision: which machine actually matches the work I do?

Too many buyers approach this backwards. They pick a power rating first, then try to make it fit their applications. The result is either overspending on capability they’ll never use, or worse — discovering mid-contract that their new machine can’t handle the plate thickness their customer specified. Let’s fix that by looking at what real laser welding machines actually do, at what thickness, with what features.

The Power-Depth Relationship

Power-Depth Relationship

Laser welding isn’t magic. The rated welding depth on a spec sheet is the single most important number for matching a machine to your work, and it’s determined primarily by output power. Here’s how the LNX Equipment product line maps out:

At 350W, the LNX-K1 is rated for 1.5mm penetration — enough for thin stainless sheet, enclosures, and decorative trim. Step up to 800W, and both the LNX-F3 and LNX-M3 deliver 3mm rated depth on stainless steel, carbon steel, and aluminum. At 1600W, the LNX-K4, LNX-F4S, and LNX-M4 all push that to 4mm. The water-cooled LNX-S5 at 1500W reaches 5mm, while the LNX-F6 at 2600W achieves 6mm in an air-cooled handheld format. At the top end, the LNX-S7 at 3000W handles up to 7mm — water-cooled handheld, but at 220kg, it’s a serious piece of equipment.

Our proprietary, fully in-house developed handheld laser welding gun features a lightweight design—weighing as little as 0.3 kg—and integrates multiple functions. This versatility allows for diverse applications while reducing hand strain during prolonged use, ensuring effortless handling.

LNX K、F、M Series Feature Tiers

These aren’t marketing ranges. They’re rated specifications from the manufacturer’s technical documentation, verified against each model’s spec sheet. When a customer asks “can this machine weld 4mm carbon steel?” the answer is deterministic: if the rated depth is 4mm or above, yes; if it’s below, no — at least not in a single pass.

Same Power, Different Capability

Material Thickness vs Machine Power

Here’s where most buyers leave money on the table. At any given power level, LNX Equipment offers three feature tiers — K, F, and M — and the difference between them isn’t power. It’s what you can do with that power.

Take 800W. The LNX-F3 comes with a DWS20 welding gun, single-wire feed, and two software modes: Continuous and Pulse. That covers standard butt and fillet welds on 0.3-3mm material. The LNX-M3 delivers the same 800W and the same 3mm depth rating, but it adds a BWS20 gun with stepper double-wire feed, plus three additional software modes: Fish-scale, Energy Storage, and Interval. Fish-scale mode produces the decorative overlapping pattern that’s become standard in visible stainless work — kitchen equipment, elevator cabins, railings. Energy Storage mode enables battery-efficient operation for field work. Interval mode controls weld spacing for precision applications.

Welding Speed Ranges by Power Tier

The same pattern repeats at 1600W. The LNX-F4 offers basic Continuous/Pulse with a single-wire DWT22X-1 gun. The LNX-K4 and LNX-F4S step up to stepper double-wire with Fish-scale mode — the K4 with a BWS20 gun, the F4S with a BWX20. The LNX-M4 adds the full five-mode suite. All four models share the same 4mm depth rating, but the feature gap between basic and full-suite is significant.

Power tells you what you can weld. Features tell you how well you can weld it.

Process Boundaries: What You Can’t Do

Every machine has a hard ceiling, and ignoring it leads to failed welds, rework, and lost contracts. Here are the boundaries that matter:

First, the air-cooled handheld ceiling. The LNX-F6 at 2600W represents the practical limit for air-cooled handheld welding — 6mm depth at 95kg. Beyond that, water cooling becomes mandatory. The S-series machines (S5, S6, S7) are water-cooled handheld systems that can be custom-equipped with welding guns and wire feeders based on customer requirements. The LNX-S5 reaches 5mm at 1500W, the S6 hits 6mm at 2000W, and the S7 tops out at 7mm at 3000W. These aren’t lightweight — 180-220kg — but they extend the handheld range to where air-cooled systems physically can’t go.

Second, the material reality. All LNX models list stainless steel, aluminum, and carbon steel as common welding materials. But aluminum’s high reflectivity means it absorbs less laser energy at the same power. In practice, if your rated depth is 3mm on steel, expect to derate approximately 20-30% for aluminum in single-pass welding. This isn’t a spec sheet figure — it’s a metallurgical reality that every laser welding operator learns.

Third, the thin-sheet floor. Laser welding at 350W with Pulse mode can handle 0.3mm sheet — but only with precise parameter control. Below that, you’re looking at laser brazing or soldering, not welding.

Scenario-Based Selection

The right approach is to start with your work, not the catalog. Here’s how typical fabrication scenarios map to the LNX product line:

A shop producing kitchen equipment and food-processing tanks works primarily in 0.5-2mm stainless steel. The LNX-K1 or LNX-F3 handles this comfortably, and if decorative fish-scale welds are part of the spec, the LNX-M3 at the same 800W is the upgrade path — no power increase needed.

A structural fabricator welding 3-4mm carbon steel angles and plates needs the 1600W tier. The LNX-K4 with its BWS20 gun and double-wire feed covers production welding, while the LNX-M4 adds the full feature set for visible welds or mixed-material work.

A heavy fabrication shop working 4-6mm plate has two paths. The LNX-F6 at 2600W keeps it air-cooled handheld — 95kg, full five-mode capability, no water system required. If the work involves thicker plate (5-7mm) or high-duty-cycle production, the water-cooled S-series steps in: the S6 at 2000W for 6mm, or the S7 at 3000W for 7mm, both custom-configured with the appropriate welding gun and wire feeder.

Beyond 7mm, the conversation shifts to multi-pass welding or robotic integration. No single-pass handheld laser welder — air-cooled or water-cooled — covers that range.

The Bottom Line

The question isn’t “what’s the best laser welder?” — it’s “what’s the right laser welder for my work?” LNX Equipment’s lineup spans 350W to 3000W across three air-cooled feature tiers (K/F/M) and one water-cooled tier (S), covering everything from 0.3mm decorative trim to 7mm heavy plate. Match the rated welding depth to your typical material thickness first, then choose the feature tier that matches your quality requirements, and finally decide whether your duty cycle demands water cooling or air cooling is sufficient.

The spec sheet is your most honest advisor. Read it before you buy.
